My Story

Here Is My Story

I was born and raised in Haiti, the daughter of a primary school teacher and a Haitian army officer. But I chose my own path by stepping into healthcare.

As a shy girl, I came alive whenever I stepped out of my comfort zone to join my mother or the nuns in charity work. I’ll never forget the feeling that rose in my chest when someone I served—often someone with so little—looked at me with gratitude in their eyes. Those smiles and quiet “thank yous” left a mark on me. What I was really feeling, I would later learn, was the shared joy of giving. That joy became something I wanted woven into my everyday life.

Nothing fulfills me more than knowing I’ve touched a heart or made a difference in someone’s life.

Give and Receive is not only my story—it’s the story of so many of my colleagues, and I believe it’s yours too.

Healthcare has never been just a workplace for me. It’s where I discovered who I am, learned to care for myself, and came to truly appreciate life. The more I grow, the more I see how deeply this work is tied to my purpose—and the more grateful I am for the chance to live it.

Like many of you, I am a mom, a daughter, a sister, a friend, and a healthcare professional. And like many of you, there was a time when I gave to everyone but myself. I dismissed my own needs and didn’t allow myself to receive. But I learned differently. I began listening—to my body, my emotions, my inner voice. I found the courage to seek help, because I refused to settle for a life without joy.

People have always been drawn to my positive energy, so I chose to embrace it fully. I made joy my practice—at first “faking it until I made it,” and eventually finding it alive in me every single day.

I would not be who I am today without the love and appreciation of my patients. Through them, I witnessed the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit. Their stories taught me to shift my focus from what hurts to what heals, from what drains to what uplifts. They reminded me to honor the privilege of serving, to cherish each moment—whether easy or difficult—and to hold on to the power of hope.

Along the way, I also found a second family in my colleagues. Together, we carried each other through the highs and lows of this noble profession. For me, healthcare is a sanctuary. It revealed the strength within me and expanded my capacity to love and be loved. It taught me to embrace life fully, savor each moment, and remain open to possibility.

I don’t share this to pretend everything in healthcare is perfect. It isn’t. But there is greatness in serving others through this work. Real fulfillment comes when we give authentically—and safely—and allow ourselves to also receive joy, gratitude, and meaning in return.

My intention is simple: to help you see the greatness in your own journey, to show you that selfless service can be a source of strength, and to remind you that you deserve not only to serve well—but to live well, and to live joyfully.

This is why I wrote Give and Receive and created the Balanced Life Compass.
Because no healthcare professional should have to choose between serving others and sustaining themselves.
